Statement on Public Events in Boston Common & Downtown Crossing

We know from police stats that Downtown is a safe neighborhood — but there’s no doubt that Downtown is experiencing public safety concerns that are more pronounced than we’ve seen in recent years, and it’s important that we take them seriously.

I believe public events on Boston Common and in Downtown Crossing are a part of the solution, not the problem. These events bring positive energy and much-needed activity to Downtown and our city, supporting local businesses and bolstering our tourism industry.

We shouldn’t let a handful of bad actors force us to sacrifice the events that bring us together and build the community spirit that makes Boston unique. These challenges stem from broader issues — and as an At-Large City Councilor representing all of Boston, I am committed to working with my colleagues, community members, and City departments to find balanced and comprehensive solutions that address the root causes, and ensure safety and vibrancy for Downtown and our whole city.
