Austin, TX Visits Boston: Rose Kennedy Greenway

The final stop on our morning tour was the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a vibrant urban oasis that has become a cornerstone of Boston's cityscape. We began at the iconic Chinatown Gate, where Robert Stigberg, the Greenway's Director of Maintenance & Capital, shared insights into the Greenway's inception, evolution, and ongoing efforts toward urban conservancy. This transformative space enhances Boston’s city life by providing parks and gardens that connect some of its oldest, most diverse, and dynamic neighborhoods. As we explored the Greenway, we observed how certain sections incorporate surface-level ramps to and from the underground highway, seamlessly integrating essential infrastructure into the landscape.

Our tour took us through several highlights, including the striking new mural at Dewey Square, the Wharf District Parks, and the whimsical Greenway Carousel, where we could imagine the joy it brings to visitors. We also learned about the meaningful design of the Armenian Heritage Park before concluding at the picturesque North End Parks.

We were joined by Austin Council Member Zo Qadri, staff from Austin Mayor Kirk Watson’s Office, staff from Mayor Pro Tem Leslie Pool’s office, Austin Council Member Chito Vela’s office, and team members from Abundant Housing MA.
